This is perhaps the best portrait I've made so far. Annette Henry leads the 'Legends by Lamplight' tour around St Peter Port and others across Guernsey and the Channel Islands. I was told to meet her outside Castle Cornet to get an atmospheric portrait to go with an article about her latest tour.

I would have preferred there to be a little light in the sky; dusk would have been ideal, but in this job we have to make the most of what is available to us at the time. I stood Annette in complete darkness with the illuminated Castle Cornet behind. My exposure was set for that, making it quite a long one. I placed a remote flashgun on a stand a metre or two infront of her, camera left and set its output to match that of the lantern and background. It was carefully positioned so as to give the impression the lantern was illuminating her face which, in reality, was not bright enough to do so sufficiently. Lastly, another flash was placed behind the subject and set to a low output in order to seperate the black hood from the dark sky. The camera was mounted on a tripod for the 1/3 second exposure. Annette herself was kept sharp as the only illumination on her was from the flash. It took a fair few shots to get the light levels and positioning spot-on, but the final result was one of my proudest portraits to date.
