Brand New Camera
posted on 17/02/2008 10 PM
Friday saw me take delivery of a brand new Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III camera body! This is Canon's flagship model boasting a resolution of 21 megapixels. For the first time ever, I now own a camera that should produce a quality and resolution that exceed my requirements. Added to that is my brand new 16-35 f/2.8 L II wide angle lens... we're talking some really serious kit! Early tests seem positive, though it'll take a while to really use it to the best of its abilities. Aside from the much larger files and bit-depth, images seem to be a lot sharper than anything I've had before. Before long there will be images gracing the gallery here so you can see for yourself.
Of course, it wasn't at all cheap. The sale of my Large Format gear went some way toward buying the lens and a quarter of the camera. The rest has come by means of a personal loan. This has cost a hell of a lot of money and I hope I've made a wise decision in making this investment. And I guess investment is the word; I'm a professional photographer, striving to create the highest-quality photographs possible... Why not use the best gear available to do it?
It should have some health benefits too. I've had to give up smoking in order to afford the loan repayments! I really can't afford both and I guess smoking's going to kill me in the end so this seemed like a good opportunity to stop. In fact, it's only really when I'm climbing cliffs with the camera gear on my back that I realise how much smoking affects my body. It's early days yet and really hard work, but I'm getting there.
I now own equipment capable of producing the highest-quality images currently available. One of my limits has always been reproduction size. That is no longer an issue. I'm expecting good things to come from this next chapter in my photographic adventure!
